The City of Delray Beach implemented a litter prevention program in 2005. The program is facilitated by the Neighborhood Services Division, which is a division of the Community Improvement Department. The program consist of utilizing a variety of approaches to increase public awareness of the seriousness of littering by involving the public in assisting with removal. The program is aimed at eliminating unsightly accumulations of litter in the City.
Business and Neighborhood Association relationships are always being made to identify the problem areas and develop creative solutions to help reduce litter.
This is a universal problem that can not be tackled alone and will depend on the citizens of Delray to take pride in where they live and actively take part in helping to reduce the overall amount of litter.
Major Components of the Litter Prevention Program are:
- Neighborhood/Community Outreach
- Swale and Sod Beautification
- Educational/Environmental School Programs
- Litter Indexing
- Earth Day
- Great American Clean Up
- Florida Coastal Clean Up
- Delray Affair (educational and informational booth)
- Arbor Day - Tree Plantings
- Adopt-a-Street
- Christmas Tree Recycling
Adopt A Street Program
The "Adopt A Street" Program was created in 1995 to help address the problem of roadside litter throughout the City. Organizations, individuals, and businesses "adopt" a minimum of one half mile stretch of a City street and agree to pick up litter at least four times a year.
The goal of "adopting" a street is to improve the quality of life through litter prevention, education and promoting volunteerism; to promote civic responsibility, community pride and enhance Delray Beach's visual appearance through clean street and beautiful neighborhoods.
