The City of Delray Beach Community Emergency Response organization consists of twenty-two (22) independent community teams that are coordinated through the City's Fire Department under the leadership of FireFighter Kenneth Thompson and Lieutenant Trisha Dunkelmann.
The City's C.E.R.T. program has trained approximately 350 volunteers, of which 150 have recently graduated from an abbreviated refresher program. The basic course consists of an 8-week program, which covers the following subjects:
Disaster Preparedness Disaster Fire Suppression Disaster Psychology and Team Organization Disaster Medical Operations: Part 1 and 2 Light Search and Rescue Operations: Part 1 and 2 Disaster Simulation Exercise
Basic equipment is issued to the volunteers and most communities have individually upgraded various types of equipment to meet their individual needs such as Medical, Search and Rescue, and Communications.
In addition, radio equipment has recently been secured which is issued to communities prior to a pending hurricane. This radio system puts communities into direct communication with the City of Delray Beach's E.O.C. at Fire Headquarters, thus providing the E.O.C. with rapid impact assessment of their individual communities.
