Home Escape Plans, Cross the Street Safely, and Fireworks are Risky Business

Home Escape Planning - If a fire breaks out in your house, it is very important that every knows what to do. Sit down with your family and draw a floor plan of your home. While every home is different, there are some things that all home fire escape plans have in common. Your family's home fire escape plan needs to show:

1 - all of the rooms in your home

2 - two ways out of every room

3 - at least one smoke alarm in or near each sleeping area and on each level of your home

4 - a meeting place outside the home

5 - a path from each room to the meeting place

6 - call 911 for the fire department

Cross the Street Safely - Here are some simple rules to follow when crossing the street:

If you are 10 years old or younger, always cross the street while holding hands with a grown-up.  Stop at the curb or edge of the street.   Listen and look for traffic to your left, then to the right, and then to the left again.  Wait until the street is clear. Keep looking left and right until you have crossed the street safely.  To be on the safe side, always hold hands with a grown-up while walking through a parking lot.  If possible, cross the street at an Intersection

Fireworks are Risky Business -  Fireworks are pretty to look at, but are very dangerous to touch! Every year, thousands of fires are started and thousands of people, mostly children, are injured by fireworks. Even sparklers can reach a temperature of 1200° F and can stay hot long after they have burned out. The best way to enjoy fireworks is to go to a public display in your community. Fireworks are not toys! If you or your friends ever find fireworks, tell a grown-up right away!
