The Delray Beach Police Department is driven to be the best police department in the nation. Toward that end, we've taken an aggressive approach in developing and promoting a positive working relationship and partnership between sworn law enforcement, the volunteers who assist our endeavors and the residents of our community. This strong and well organized police-driven alliance has proven to be extremely effective in our crime fighting efforts, and has improved the overall quality of life for those who live in Delray Beach.
Our Volunteer Program consists of approximately four hundred men and women who dedicate countless hours to add to the safety and security of our community. The volunteers work in a multitude of areas throughout our city: parking enforcement, roving patrol, citizens on patrol, support services, marine unit, elder affairs, etc. The amazing 40,306 hours contributed by our dedicated volunteers are the equivalent of having an additional nineteen full-time employees assisting in the accomplishment of the police mission.
In 2008 our Volunteer Coordinator Officer Andrew Arena and Chief Anthony Strianese traveled to San Diego, California and were awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Law Enforcement Volunteer Programs Award. Our program was one of only three awards issued worldwide.
It has been, and will continue to be, the fundamental policy of this agency to fully support the concept of crime prevention in our neighborhoods by encouraging residents to join the Delray Beach Police Department, and its Volunteers, in working together to make a difference. We make great strides each year in improving the quality of our services, and we attribute much of our success to contributions made by the men and women of our Volunteer Program.
