Construction at Atlantic Dunes Park is beginning this week in a big way! For the next three days (until March 9), the contractor will be driving the pilings to support the pavilion and boardwalk. This may be disturbing to nearby residents due to noise and vibrations. During this time, the park will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
Atlantic Dunes Pavilion, which was destroyed by arson, is a much-loved landmark of the local community. To maintain its original design, the pavilion will be replaced exactly as it was in appearance. The differences lie in the additional structural improvements that will allow the pavilion to withstand category 5 hurricane winds. This includes sinking pilings into the sand and additional bracing on the roof structure.
Door hangers providing details was distributed to area residents and provided to Parks and Recreation staff. Also, additional signage is posted near the park to inform visitors on the status of the construction site. The project is expected to be completed by the end of May 2018 and the total cost is $320,000.
Beach-goers can still find additional accessible parking across South Ocean Boulevard in the surface parking lot. A newly installed beach access mat is available behind the main beach pavilion on Atlantic Avenue and A1A.
