The current construction project providing our municipal beach facilities with a much-anticipated facelift was first conceived in 2009 by a group of folks known as the Beach Property Owners' Association, Inc. (BPOA). During that year, this group of beach lovers encouraged local architect Bob Currie to draft a design concept showing ways to incorporate improvements to the public areas of the beach. In the years to follow, the BPOA provided leadership on this topic in the community, holding charrettes and raising funds to serve as seed money to begin the project. When the economy slowed, however, the plan was postponed, but never forgotten.
In the past two years, the City of Delray Beach City Commission has championed the cause, fast-tracking the project by providing funds to design the architecture and complete construction plans for the Beach Area Master Plan. Construction for the project began on April 3, 2017, and was completed by the beginning of October 2017.
Once it was finished, the nearly 2.2 million residents and visitors to Delray Beach each year enjoyed 1.3 miles of beautiful, wider and well-designed sidewalks. Many of the beach entrances were equipped with new showers, bicycle and towel racks and drinking fountains complete with bottle fillers. Preexisting beach accesses remained the simple sand trails to your favorite spots to enjoy the sun and surf that they always have been. The improvements will not detract from the natural beauty that is Delray Beach.
The two existing gazebos at each end of the beach will be reconstructed thanks in part to a generous donation from the Lattner Family Foundation. The short knee wall at the northeast end of the beach also is getting a well-deserved facelift, becoming a more prominent feature of the Beach P promenade and providing a place for beachgoers to sit a while and watch people and waves. Our four-legged friends will find that we have included plenty of grass patches for their enjoyment, along with the pet waste stations and water bowls at doggie level.
The City of Delray Beach is excited to bring these projects to our citizens, and we look forward to enjoying the fruits of our labor with you for years to come. We thank you for your patience while we build a better beach front for us all.
