The City of Delray Beach named finalist for 2017 All-America City Award

DELRAY BEACH, FL, April 19, 2017 – Shortly after being named a “Pacesetter Community” by the nationally distinguished Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (CGLR) for its success in elevating school readiness, school attendance and summer reading of city school-aged children, Delray Beach is again in the national spotlight.

The City of Delray Beach has been selected by the National Civic League as a finalist for the prestigious All-America City Award (AAC). The award, presented to 10-12 communities annually, celebrates and recognizes those that exemplify outstanding civic accomplishments. This year, the National Civic League and CGLR will shine a light on  communities that have made measurable progress for low-income children on key drivers of early reading success including: school readiness, school attendance, summer learning and grade-level reading.

The city joined the national call to action by the CGLR network in 2012 after learning that only 36% of its children attending a Title I school read on grade level by the third grade. Over the past 5 years, the city along with its community partners has made significant progress by implementing many different strategies to support the children and families in the community to change academic outcomes.

“Recognizing Pacesetters is CGLR’s way of applauding the civic leaders, organizations and agencies that have joined forces with our teachers and school administrators to build brighter futures for the children in their communities,” said Mayor Cary Glickstein. “I could not be more proud of the many participants and organizations that have helped promote these critically important programs for Delray’s next generation.”

“Earning the nomination for the All-America City designation would not have been possible without the help and dedication of our non-profit partners and the School District of Palm Beach County”, added Janet Meeks, Education Coordinator for the City of Delray Beach.

As part of the final stage of the competition, a community delegation will present the city’s story before a jury of national civic experts on June 14-16 in Denver, Colorado. 27 communities are competing for the designation.
